Nursing: A Profession at Critical Mass

We have all heard of the nationwide, nay dare I say, worldwide, nursing shortage. It is a career that does not bring down six figure incomes, has stereotypes formed by soap operas (who can forget nurse Jessie on General Hospital), does not bring celebrity status, a profession that does not include a posse, will not put you on the fast track to politics, will not place you next in line for the presidency, and will not make you the hearthrob of millions.

It is a profession that requires intelligence, good common sense, adaptability, excellent communication skills, empathy, non judgementalism, multitasking, patience, tolerance, compassion, assertiveness, and listening. We deal with every aspect of society- the good, the bad, and the ugly. We deal with people when they are their most vulnerable and dysfunctional, their most stressed and worried, in short, not at their best.

It is hard work, high stress, constantly changing and adapting, exciting, and sometimes painful- both physically and mentally. What a great job! What more could you ask for?
